What to Do on Rest Days (It’s Not Just Doing Nothing)

Be honest, when you think “rest day,” your ideal day off from training is either staying home, in bed (or on the sofa watching Netflix) or going out to eat with your friends after work to have drinks and decompress.

What your body actually needs on rest days is active recovery — gentle movement that keeps your circulation flowing, and helps your muscles heal faster. “Active rest” is the sweet spot between movement and stillness—try a light walk, stretching, or gentle yoga before bed. The goal is to keep your body moving without pushing it.

Pick a day next week to skip hard training. Instead, take a walk, join your local yoga class, stretch it out, or even take a moment and breathe deeply. Give your body what it’s really asking for: care.

Remember, recovery isn’t a pause — it’s progress.
